To Act Justly, Love Tenderly, Walk Humbly
Published in Paperback by Wipf & Stock Publishers (01 October, 1997)
Authors: Brueggemann, Groome, Parks, Walter Brueggemann, Thomas Groome, and Sharon Parks
Average review score:

Conference on Spirituality...
Recently I asked Prof Brueggemann for one of his lesser known writings on Justice or Injustice. This request came for a friend who as a non-violent protester at Ft. Benning GA was convicted to serve a six months sentence at a Kentucky Federal Prison. Without hesitation our good professor came up with the single chapter in this little gem of 65 pages! He simply repeated the names of the writers - Sharon Parks and Thomas Groome and their conference on Spirituality in Portland Maine in 1983. His valued contributions are the Preface written in May of 1984 and the first Chapter with the title of "Voices of the Night - Against Justice."

Since Brueggemann is the Theologian of three writers he sets the stage with the technical issues and background of Micah's tradition among the Old Testament prophets of Justice, Mercy and Compassion. As only our favorite OT Prof can accomplish he makes the case for Micah's program of poetry as a guide for our ways in education. As in his teaching he outlines the texts with headings of Economically, Epistemologically and Linguistically. Along the way he briefly focuses on Torah of Yahweh and the Exodus Memory: "Micah offers a vision of the nations submitting to the torah of Yahweh." He relates theology behind textual interpretation with doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God. As one of my Chaplain friends notes, "most every exposition of Brueggemann comes out like poetry!" He is first and foremost a Poet.

I will send my friend this powerful, mediating, spiritual force for supporting those who stand-up for the rights of those who are dis-enfranchised. Another parallel book title that comes to mind is "Jesus and the Disinherited" by Howard Thurman! It was said to have been constantly carried around by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Top-Secret, Personal Beeswax: A Journal by Junie B. (and Me!)
Published in Hardcover by Random House (25 February, 2003)
Authors: Barbara Park and Denise Brunkus
Average review score:

Fantastic interactive book for Junie fans
My daughter received this book from her brother for her 7th birthday and was thrilled. The format introduces a young child to the concept of a personal journal, using Junie's entries to illustrate how you can form and write down your thoughts. It develops both reading and writing skills. My daughter loved it so much, she started writing in it as soon as she opened it and wouldn't stop until she was bleary-eyed. She was thrilled to learn that Junie's birthday is just one day after hers and they are the same age. The interactive nature of the book forges a wonderful bond between Junie fans and their favorite 1st grader. The book is also very sturdy -- hardbound with a padded cover and gloss coating to stand up to lots of use.

Total Control: High-Performance Street Riding Techniques
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (August, 2003)
Authors: Lee Parks and Darwin Holmstrom
Average review score:

The more you know the better it gets.
Total control is a very informative book. I've been riding motorcycles for 12 years and the tips that Lee gave me in this book really helped my riding. I've took the MSF ERC and they don't even mention some of the helpful ideas in the class that Lee gives in his book. Corners use to be a hurdle I had to overcome but after reading Total control they are so much easier and More FUN! Thanks Lee.

I've read Sport Riding techniques by Nick Ienatsch also and Total control is a little easier to read. Both are must reads for all motorcyclist.

Touring Colorado Hot Springs (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (June, 1999)
Author: Carl Wambach
Average review score:

A Complete and Concise Hot Springs Guide
As a Colorado resident I have been fortunate to have visited several of the larger, more popular area hot springs. My search for new hot springs experiences led me to Wambach's "Touring Colorado Hot Springs." This book is well organized and lists the springs according to the region of Colorado where they are found. The included maps are clear and easy to read. Especially helpful information I found to be the "Best Secluded Locations", "Best Family Locations" and "Best Character Locations" section of the book. I found this book so good that I have now ordered 4 more copies to give as gifts.

Traditional Narratives of the Arikara Indians (Studies in the Anthropology of North American Indians)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (June, 1991)
Author: Douglas R. Parks
Average review score:

Awesome collection
This 4-vol. set includes 2 volumes of narratives in Arikara with interlinear translation and two volumes of freer translation of the texts. A set of two audio cassettes is also available from University of Nebraska Press (and presumably from Amazon.com if you ask about it). _Traditional Narratives_ is really almost beyond criticism or praise. What Parks has done here is not just to present scholars and American Indians with a gold mine of Plains Indian traditional culture. He has given us and the Arikaras by far the most substantial, most accurate, and easily accessible collection of material in the Arikara language by some of its last fully fluent custodians (all of the informants for _Traditional Narratives_ are now deceased). For linguists, this is the largest corpus we will ever have of a beautiful and amazingly intricate language, now, like many other American Indian languages, edging toward extinction.

Just like being there!
This book is not only concise but also very descriptive. The trails are described very well, as well as driving directions on how to get to them, and you are told what you can expect to see on each trail. It's very portable in case you'd like to tuck it into a backpack, too! Good job!

The Trails of Virginia : Hiking the Old Dominion
Published in Paperback by The University of North Carolina Press (03 December, 2003)
Author: Allen de Hart
Average review score:

Hiking Virginia's Trails
Allen de Hart's The Trails of Virginia:Hiking the Old Dominionis a classic and exhaustive study of places to hike throughout a statethat is known for its beauty and history but less acknowledged for its vast array of outdoor recreational opportunities. The author doesn't just cover his personal favorites or the 50 best walks, but every trail in the state. He's included information on distance, history, scenic features, degree of difficulty, and directions - every piece of information the hiker will need. I've used this book countless times in not only planning a hike, but also in the process of researching and writing my own outdoor guides. No matter where you plan to hike or what your level of fitness is, a well-worn copy of the Trails of Virginia should sit on your bookshelf as it does on mine.

Trains of discovery : western railroads and the national parks
Published in Unknown Binding by Northland Press ()
Author: Alfred Runte
Average review score:

An imaginative look at passenger trains and National Parks
Trains of Discovery does well what few books seem to do today -- it looks into the texture of American's past for hidden lessons important for our future. The author has done a masterful job educating readers about how and why America's railroads contributed to the development of the National Park system, a unique story about an industry electing to connect itself with America's spectacular natural landscapes. It examines the railroads' commercial objectives, their sponsorship of unique artwork that captured the spirit of the age, the mobility and development issues at the time, and how all of this affected our national cultural identity. This book, with its clear writing and rich illustrations, also makes learning about all this fun. The author looks to the future and passionately and effectively conveys the need to restore passenger rail service to natural areas as an alternative to auto congestion and pollution. He concludes, "Trains and the national parks just naturally go together." He has me convinced, and as an author and public speaker I've found myself quoting Mr. Runte's book many times.
